While we focus on whole body health here at PMAB, with massage therapy, yoga, chiropractic work, energy healing, and other types of movement, we also find it important to be involved in our local community. We regularly team up with Rise Above Violence, Pagosa Springs’ local domestic violence advocate agency, to assist with fundraisers and awareness whenever we can. We believe that being involved in the community in this way brings about healing on a deeper level, and we get the opportunity to learn how to better assist our own clients as well.
So for nearly the entire time PMAB has been open for business, we have donated our space once a week for Rise Above Violence to host their HerStory Women’s Group. This group is a peer-supported, safe, anonymous space where women can come together and find support with each other. Any tough topics are welcomed and supported here. Rise Above Violence mainly deals with domestic violence and sexual assault, and this group is tailored to create a safe space to discuss these topics.
So what does “peer-supported” mean?
You’ve probably seen me if you have come by PMAB for a massage or a yoga class; I help manage the studio, but I also facilitate the women’s group here every Tuesday morning. I’ve been volunteering with Rise for several years now, and between my training with them, previous volunteer experience, and my own personal background, I am able to create a safe space for this group right here in PMAB’s studio. I am quick to tell people that I am not a therapist! Peer-supported means I am here to hold space and give anyone who needs it someone to confide in and talk to.
What about the anonymous aspect?
Now, Pagosa Springs is a very small town. We all feel it every time we walk into the grocery store and see half a dozen people we know! I understand that, and know how hard it can be to come to a group like this where maybe you’ll recognize me or someone else. I can assure you that anything said inside that room is 100% confidential. If we see each other outside of the group in town, I will absolutely act like I don’t know you (unless you come up to me!). This puts all the choice back into your hands.
Ok, so what exactly happens if you choose to come to a HerStory group meeting?
The group goes from 8:30-9:30am every Tuesday morning, so you’ll come to the PMAB studio just before 8:30, because I do lock the front door while the group is in session. If you’ve never had any interaction with Rise before, I’ll have you fill out a short intake form for them (this is information for them to use for grants and funding from the state, your personal information does not go beyond their office). Then, you’re welcome to a cup of coffee or tea if you like, and we can simply sit and chat about whatever anyone may be going through at that time. I want women to feel safe and supported here, so know that even difficult topics are welcome here.
Like I said before, I’m not a therapist and I’m not here to tell you what to do! I am here to listen and provide resources if need be. Check out the interview with Jenn and myself in the video below for more information!
So I hope you come join me if you’re struggling with any of these experiences and find some support and comfort! Every Tuesday morning from 8:30-9:30am at PMAB + Movement! Hope to see you around the studio! ~Stefanie
